LECTURES TO MY STUDENTS consists of many outstanding addresses by the great C. H. Spurgeon, delivered to the students of "The Pastors' College," which he founded in 1856. "The preacher's inner life as well as his public ministry" was the subject of these addresses. Elocution and gesticulation were the theme of several, while the volume on THE ART OF ILLUSTRATIONS (abundantly illustrated) is perhaps the most comprehensive work still available today.
Originally there were 3 Volumes in the "series." In addition to the first two books which contained 23 Lectures, Spurgeon prepared a third book, COMMENTING AND COMMENTARIES, being 2 lectures on Commenting, along with a Catalogue of Commentaries (with his opinions and preferences). A fourth book Spurgeon had long carefully gathered the materials for was The Art of Illustration, consisting of 7 lectures.
Along with the Lectures series, Mr. Spurgeon had other works of a similar character published (such as: The SOUL WINNER, AN ALL-ROUND MINISTRY, ONLY A PRAYER MEETING, ECCENTRIC PREACHERS, FEATHERS FOR ARROWS, FLASHES OF THOUGHT etc). In one of the volumes previously published, he wrote of more works in preparation: "It is hoped that THE COLLEGE SERIES may render efficient service to preachers of the gospel. Friends who appreciate the books will greatly oblige by making them known to others. The same motive which prompted the author to write, leads him to desire a large circle of readers." Now that the beloved President has been called home, it is more important than ever that his books should be placed in the hands of the young preachers who will not have the privilege of hearing his voice.
